Fox confirmed that The Day the Earth Stood Still remake is definitely underway for summer 2008!
(one week after Iron Man). The original is a sci-fi classic 1951 movie about an alien and a robot that land on Earth to try and save the world from being destroyed. IMDB doesn't even have a listing for this remake, but Box Office Mojo claims it's being produced by Fox, fast-tracked for a spot in 2008's busy summer.
There are some in Hollywood, and I’m speaking of 20th Century Fox in particular, who feel it is time to take another look at this venerable classic and do a 21st Century remake of it. Before they do I hope they take a long and hard look at what they will be attempting to duplicate. While I normally don’t have a problem with doing remakes of older films, there are some products that simply should be left alone, preserved for posterity and be allowed to stand on their own merits. “The Day the Earth Stood Still” is one of those classic film products that fits that category. We should have learned that lesson just recently with the great Steven Spielberg’s attempt to remake George Pal’s classic film “War of the Worlds.” Steven’s film was alright, but even someone as great as he is at creating legendary films could not top that original 1953 classic, and it will quite possibly and most probably, occur here again in this particular case.
The opening line to the opening song in The Rocky Horror Show is:
"Michael Rennie was ill, The Day The Earth Stood Still."
Let's hope his illness isn't anything to do with a remake. I don't think it's difficult to choose what to remake and what not to remake, it's how it's remade that counts. There are some damn good remakes out there, the good ones being those whereby the cast and crew treat the property with the due reverence, rather than as nothing more than a money-making exercise. _________________ "It's ok to be different, it's good to be different, and we should question ourselves before we judge others." -- Johnny Depp

Totally agree with oddbodd, some re-makes have been made very well, when the story has been treated with respect. Hope the same goes for Day The Earth Stood Still, I love Gort and I remember as a kid the ominous feeling I got from him hardly needing to do anything to show his unlimited power. So what is the new Gort going to look like ? and be able to do, will they go for the original concept or do they go all out with some T 1000 meets Transformers thing ???? We will just have to wait and see, any first pics of the new Gort will be welcome. _________________ http://www.withintheshadowofthetree.com/

After making my post, I thought about the other films mentioned in that song. Flash Gordon was remade, and that version is now a classic itself (long live Brian Blessed). Similarly, King Kong has had numerous remakes, the recent Peter Jackson version being very well received. Hopefully, TDTESS will go the same way. _________________ "It's ok to be different, it's good to be different, and we should question ourselves before we judge others." -- Johnny Depp
Just announced today, Keanu Reeves has been cast to play Klatu.
Dang, we are in trouble. _________________ "It's ok to be different, it's good to be different, and we should question ourselves before we judge others." -- Johnny Depp
Bit info ..... Has a little spoiler so don't read on if you don't want to know.
The remake of (The Day the Earth Stood Still) will supposedly remain true to the original movie, however there is a chance the remake will more likely remain true to the short story upon which the 1951 movie is based.
In the 1951 movie, Gort is described as one of a race of robots created by the planets to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. If the 2008 remake follows the short story by (Harry Bates), "Farewell to the Master" upon which the 1951 movie is based, it will be revealed at the end of the movie by Gort himself that he is the master, and not Klaatu. _________________ http://www.withintheshadowofthetree.com/

Its one of my Fav movies, I hope they dont F*** it up, please god make that matrix bloke get it right this time. Personally I think they need someone with more worldly presence to do justice to Michael Rennie's Klaatu
Klaatu barada nikto!
I was going to ask what other movie uttered these fine lines, until I came across this while making sure I was right, seems there's more than I thought.. ( I was thinking of Army Of Darkness).
