Anyone who's seen a good number of Hammer films will know that it's folly to believe that they can adapt a classic book faithfully, particularly because of their insistence on trying to fit stories into 84 minutes. Frankenstein and Dracula suffered for this, but were entertaining in their own ways. The Hound of the Baskervilles isn't quite up to that standard.
They did, however, have a hard act to follow. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous work is an exquisite piece of writing, detailed and full of suspense. Hammer's 84-minute philosophy does not allow for either of these elements, and it's such a shame.
This is compounded by the myriad infidelities to the original story, often completely unnecessary - the spider, for instance, and turning Mr. Frankland into the naturalist.
Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are, however, on characteristic good form, which will please most Hammer fans. However, anyone professing to be a big fan of the book will probably be disappointed, as I was. I shall be investigating the Basil Rathbone versions of Sherlock Holmes' cases - hopefully they will prove a little more interesting. _________________ "It's ok to be different, it's good to be different, and we should question ourselves before we judge others." -- Johnny Depp

You can't go wrong with The Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes OB, being in BW only adds to the atmosphere of all the movies.
The BR Hound of the Baskervilles is my favorite version of all time, it's never been beaten in my opinion, but that is just my opinion, I will be interested to see what you think.
The only thing that started to spoil the BR Sherlock Holmes for me was the mix mash of time periods, with the Nazi's etc.

They were very enjoyable don't get me wrong, SH was very suited towards spying and espionage, but I just preferred a good mystery and obviously when he pitted his wits against his arch nemesis Moriarty. _________________ http://www.withintheshadowofthetree.com/

You're the second person who's recommended them but not been into the Nazi stuff.
I'm planning on picking up a few more of the SH books as well this month. I haven't met Moriarty yet, but I'm dying to. _________________ "It's ok to be different, it's good to be different, and we should question ourselves before we judge others." -- Johnny Depp
