The Legend of 1900
Max Tooney enters an antique shop just after World War II for the purpose of pawning his trumpet. He asks if he can play it one last time, and proceeds to play a piece that the shopkeeper recognizes from a broken record master he found inside a recently-acquired second-hand piano. He asks who had written and played the music. At that, the story of 1900 is related to the shopkeeper (and the viewer) in the form of a flashback, and the story takes off from there.
Don't want to say to much more as it'll spoil this amazing film.
Made in 1998 by the director Giuseppe Tornatore, better know for Cinema Paradiso, it stars Tim Roth and who gives an amazing performance as 1900.
I can highly recommend this film as for a while it'll probably give you a feeling that you somehow know the answer to life, the universe and everything and it isn't 42 it's 1900.
An American Werewolf in London - about the best modern horror you'll find, with the added delight of Jenny Agutter.
Theatre of Blood - Vincent Price plays an actor who disposes of critics in very grisly, yet often humorous, Shakesearean ways.
Brief Encounter - A 1940s film of taboo love, marked by a superlative performance from Celia Johnson.
Ed Wood - A poignant look at the troubled life of the much-maligned B-movie director, as told by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp playing the eponymous director
Sliding Doors - My favourite modern romance, beautifully acted and very clever, taking two perspective of how Gwyneth Paltrow's life may have been had she missed or not missed a tube train.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Still, to my mind, the best action film produced by Hollywood this decade, petty thief Robert Downey Jr finds himself becoming an actor, and after meeting cop Val Kilmer at a party, finds himself in a much bigger world of crime. Very witty, funny and quirky in equal measures.
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - A road movie with a twist. Two transvestites and a transsexual cross Australia for a drag performance, encountering a number of misfits along the way. Some excellent music and dialogue.
The Nanny - The title is hardly imposing, but it's one of the little-known gems from Hammer Studios, and a thriller worthy of Hitchcock himself. After a young boy returns from a psychiatric institution to live with his family, he and the Nanny still don't seem to get on. The reasons why are shocking, and very well depicted in this film.

Totally forgot about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I remember you writing a review a while back and it sounded tantalizing then. I must add this film to my got to see list.
