A beautiful yet ghoulish film with a soupçon of deliciously dark comedy. Those with a penchant for Vincent Price, Shakespeare or just good old fashioned gore will probably love it.
Vincent Price plays Edward Lionheart, a modern stage actor obsessed by Shakespeare and with a fine repertoire of the Bard's plays. However, he isn't happy with the reviews that a local critic's circle have given him. One by one they meet their fates, all in manners taken from Shakespeare's plays. There's elements from Richard III, Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice and even a quite bloody Cymbeline-style decapitation, and some others that I won't mention lest they spoil any gory surprises. Diana Rigg adds some extra appeal to this as his daughter, but there are also appearances from a number of "what-have-I-seen-him-in-before" actors.
Vincent Price is once again in fine form, yet another of the parts that you can't imagine would be performed anywhere near as well as he can. I think Shakespeare would consider this a very fitting tribute to his work.
