Brief Encounter

It's easy to see how this 1945 David Lean film has become known as one of cinema's classic romances. It is a truly beautiful piece of filmmaking. Excellently directed and shot, when mixed with Noel Coward's writing and some excellent performaces by Trevor Howard and in particular Celia Johnson, there's little scope to find fault in it.

Celia Johnson is Laura, a happily married woman with two children. Whilst in a railway station one Thursday, a Dr. Alec Harvey (Howard) comes to her aid when she gets something in her eye. The two encounter each other on a regular basis from then on, eventually agreeing to meet on regular occasions. But he is also happily married, and the inevitable problems occur. The story is told from Laura's perspective as she imagines how she'd tell the story of this to her husband.

There is a stark, yet grim realism to her account of events and their consequences, which is another factor that helps this film remain a hit.

Very Happy So pleased you like this film, for years I've told people how good it is and they have always gone "Em ...yes probably when it first came out it was".
I personally don't think time can change a truly good movie ... put it this way all the technology in the world and money, for me can't beat the original "Frankenstein" Movies, and for me the original David Lean "Oliver Twist" is far superior than the big musical version. Have to admit haven't seen Roman Polanski's version but can't see it in anyway capturing the BW mood of Lean's version. Very Happy

You make a very good point there. A lot of people in Hollywood seem to think that if you make a film look spectacular, the film itself will be all-conquering. However, no matter how much effort you put into the look of the film, it's nothing if the acting, writing and directing aren't up to the same standards.

I was out on the drink with Relic last night, and started talking about Brief Encounter to him. He also mentioned how much he liked it and started talking about it, but I got the feeling he wasn't talking about the same film. When he mentioned the bit where they "got arrested", I had to stop him and ask him what film he was on about. The reply?

"Brief Encounters of the Third Kind".
