Cannes Man

It's a shame that film has never had a major release, as it's very original in many respects and quite entertaining, as well as being a parody of the whole film-making business at the same time.

It's shot entirely in and around Cannes, home to the world's greatest film festival. The film takes on the look and feel of a fly-on-the-wall documentary, complete with interviews of various people, for reasons made clear later in the film.

The story concerns Sy Lerner (Seymour Cassel), an ageing film maker, and Frank Rhino (Franceso Quinn, son of Anthony), a bumbling courier sent to Cannes to deliver something to the people at Troma. Lerner makes a bet with a fellow producer that he can turn any average person into the toast of the festival, and Frank Rhino finds himself in the right place at the right time. Thus begins Lerner's grand plan to make people believe that Frank Rhino is the hottest new script writer to appear, and before you know it, everyone wants to be a part of it - even though no actual script exists.

"Everyone", in this case, includes a number of actors making appearances as themselves - such as Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper, Chris Penn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Treat Williams, Jim Jarmusch, Harvey Weinstein, Benicio del Toro and John Malkovich.

The eventual outcome is somewhat predictable, but it's nevertheless a good behind-the-scenes look at the high end of the movie industry, and the stupidity of some of the people is cringeworthy, as you could actually believe that some film producers, financiers and directors would fall for such trickery. Worth seeing if you can get hold of a copy.
