CluelessThis is a movie that I've loved since it came out back in 1993. Although at the time I didn't realise, it's based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, and is a good example of how a piece of classic literature can be modernised, even if it is as a teen comedy that probably won't be examined too closely by the Oscar people.
Alicia Silverstone (phwooar, I say), plays Cher, a Beverly Hills teenager who lived with her widowed father, a lawyer. Like Jane Austen's heroine, she likes to do a bit of matchmaking here and there, without spending too much time worrying about having a love-life herself. But when she takes new girl Brittany Murphy (phwooar, once more) under her wing, things begin to go awry.
The cast also includes Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Breckin Meyer in fairly early roles. Rudd has also appeared in The Forty Year-old Virgin and Friends, Faison in Scrubs and Meyer is perhaps best known for playing the lead in Road Trip.
It's a fun film, done in the mode of a fairly typical teen comedy, with lots of colour, beautiful people and style - but quite a while before American Pie and suchlike came along.
