This is an adaptation from the 60s TV series of the same name.
Story
Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is an Ingelligence Analyst for a government organisation called CONTROL who longs to become an agent. Although he is quite bumbling, after he sits the exams he proves he could be an agent. Unfortunately, The Chief (Alan Arkin) thinks Max is too valuable as an analyst to promote him to being an agent. However, an enemy organisation, CHAOS, infiltrates CONTROL and all the agents have been comprimised except Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) and Max. The Chief teams Max and Agent 99 together to stop CHAOS' plans.
Verdict
I had my doubts about this as most TV conversions do not turn out to be very good or lack the original feel, Bewitched, Dukes and Hazzard anyone. Anyway, this proves to be the exceptions It is a fantastic conversion and possibly the best one so far. Steve Carell is brilliant and the ideal choice for Max (thank god Jim Carrey didn't like he was supposed to in 1998.) Anne Hathaway is great as Agent 99, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson brilliantly portraying Agent 23 with some hilarious moments, this is a sure fire winner. However, I can't forget Alan Arkin who brilliantly plays The Chief. He is still going strong in his 70s and still one of Hollywoods finest. For me, Arkin has one of the funniest scenes in the film. Won't say too much but this. Max, "Chief, are you thinking what I'm thinking." The Chief, "I don't know. Were you thinking, holy sh**, holy sh**, a sword fish nearly went through my head." Watch it and you'll see what I mean
I would thoroughly recommend this and give it a 5 out of 5.
