Superhero movies have accounted for a fair portion of Hollywood's output over the past decade. So it's not surprising that other takes on the superhero genre have been produced. A notable disappointment was M. Knight Shayamalan's Unbreakable, which at first appeared to have a very good concept, and its trailer did the job of making the film look attractive. The end result, however, didn't live up to the hype.
I'm sad to say that Hancock has followed in these footsteps. Though this film has more of a comedy angle, it's fair to say that most of the comedy is what appears in the trailer. The story is slipshod and often quite maudlin, particularly for a comedy. The ending was a no-win situation. I won't spoil it, but the film can finish on one of two tones: Very depressingly, or with an over-sugary happy ending. Neither of these really fit the bill of a spoof.
Will Smith, who will undoubtedly be one of the draws to this movie, isn't quite as animated as usual, and the other two main characters don't exactly steal the show. It's entertaining enough, and indeed funny at times, but not what it advertises to be, or indeed could be.

Story
Hancock (Will Smith) is one of a kind and is a bit of an unwanted superhero. Everytime he saves someone or stops crime, he causes a commotion in the process. During one of his outtings, he saves a PR guy (Jason Bateman) who befriends Hancock to help promote him and gain the public support with interesting results.
Verdict
When I first came out, I was a bit disappointed. However, on reflection, the movie isn't too bad. It's not your typical superhero vs supervillain. It is more of story of why he is the way he is, etc. Special effects are good and there are some funny bits. It may not be in my top rated films but it isn't in my worst either. I can't say anymore otherwise it will spoil it for those that want to see it. It is enjoyable but was a bit overhyped and not one of Will Smith's best.
Out of 5 stars I give it 2.5.

I went to see this last night, and what a big load of trolop. Lately Will Smith has been bringing out some turkeys, and this is one of them.

Finally got to see it today and have to say I enjoyed it immensely...Only thing is, I really did try and avoid any info before seeing this film but I knew at every corner before it happened what was going to happen next... even the twisty turny bits in the story. Only explanation is it's been made before, probably about a trillion years ago, in a past life, before the earth died out again and again, as it does and probably will again when Will Smith's part will either be played by a insect or a lizard etc.
Any hoo less of the philosophizing...I enjoyed the film.
