Henry VI've never read this particular play, nor had I seen it performed in any manner until last night, when I saw a showing of it as part of the Summer of British Film season that's invaded our cinemas recently. Having already seen, and indeed been much impressed by, Sir Laurence Olivier's portrayal of Richard III, I was determined to give this one a go, despite knowing only a little about the history of Henry V himself.
Shakespeare's play mostly focuses on the Battle of Agincourt, in 1415, its causes and its effects. This battle (in reality) was won by Henry against massive odds, and so has earned him a place in the list of our great rulers. The film, however, begins at the Globe Theatre in London, amid a performance of this very play. The first few scenes are enacted, and we get glimpses of audience, backstage, and the perceived pomp and circumstance of the Elizabethan theatre.
However, when the time comes that Henry is to set sail, the camera moves "through" the scenery at the back of the stage, to grant us film-goers proper settings - boats, fields, large castles. However, the theatre-goer is still not to be disappointed, for all of the sets are still ostensibly theatrical in their style; basic and unrealistic. This is not a bad thing, for it makes for a very colourful, interesting and enjoyable setting for a film.
It's not just this that makes it visually stunning. Technicolour is at its most glorious, with the rich pageant of the medieval battle scene shown in beautfiul, bold hues. And it's the battle scenes that are the most breathtaking - the scene showing the French horses accelerating toward the English is done in such a random yet realistic manner that it seems to be directed by the horses themselves.
Sir Laurence was no less outstanding, and does perfect justice to his two big speeches, both well known to the Shakespeare buff. I also love the character of the Dauphin - exactly the sort of person you wish you could hit with a frying pan.
