Jason and the ArgonautsWhatever you might think about stop-motion animation, you have to respect the amount of sheer work that goes into it. Particularly in a film such as this, which uses a fair amount of it (not sparingly, it must be said) and makes it look realistic enough. A little clunky, perhaps - but still better, in my opinion, than the oh-so smooth effect you get with dodgy CGI.
This film is, obviously, an adaptation of the Greek myth, which is faithful anough to the legend. Most aspects of the film - the directing, writing, acting, et cetera, are good, but the outstanding thing is the stop-motion. It takes a number of forms, and betrays the sheer dedication, detail and skill of the animator(s) - unfortunately, skill that is becoming all too rare.
The shining jewels in the crown of the animation, however, are the skeletons, borne from the Hydra's teeth. It's probable that this film wouldn't quite have the reputation that it does if it wasn't for the animation - for which I'm thankful, for it's a fun, colorful film that really brings the old Greek myth alive.
