Kiss Kiss Bang BangReleased in 2005, this film must easily be one of the most original films produced by Hollywood in the last decade - or even beyond. It is perhaps best described as a black comedy crime thriller, with exactly the right amounts of quirky wit, crazy crime and thrilling, er, thrills.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Harry Lockhart, a petty criminal in LA who unexpectedly finds himself at a Hollywood party - after a theft that had gone wrong ended up in him being audtioned for a movie. Here he meets "Gay Perry", played by Val Kilmer, who arranges for Lockhart to accompany him on some private detective work as research for his part. Later on, Lockhart bumps into an old friend, and before you know it, corpses are turning up everywhere.
Lockhart is also the narrator of this tale, which has some very sharp dilagoue as well as monologue, interspersed with farcical comedy that seems to add realism as well as humour to the proceedings.
It is in many ways surreal, but ingeniously so, with some excellent one-liners.
