Well Jonny,

There is a funny story behind John's Pinny or Apron, or whatever you like to call it. John came up from Barnsley, South Yorkshire to make the latex pieces for John Morris's face, he had already done the face cast and made all the moulds to cast every foam latex piece of the face needed. The foam latex needed to be put on fresh, so three days before the shoot he came up to mix the foam latex and fill the mould and put into the oven to bake, so a kitchen is perfect to do this, nothing special needed except a temperature meter placed inside the oven to make sure of it's correct temperature for the foam latex to be baked.

Any hoo, John had packed everything he needed except his white work apron, so when he arrived and started to do his thing he needed an apron, now John is a very nice person and would not hurt a fly, so when my wife suggested he borrow one of her aprons John is not the type to say no, so he put it on and got stuck into his work, not aware that several of my wife's friends were coming round. John had completely forgot he was wearing the apron, so when everyone arrived he came into the living room with not a care in the world, until Greta one of my wife's friends said she liked his apron, he looked down and turned the same colour as the apron, he quickly made a hasty exit back into the kitchen and stayed their until they went.

So the photographs taken of John was while he was so into his work that he had completely forgot what he was wearing.

There was a few reasons why I replaced the bird with a butterfly.

Originally the Wise One was meant to be a bird and fly down to where the abandoned Small One baby lay... it was to hop, go behind and transform into the Wise One. I tried animating a bird in lightwave but I didn’t have any plugins that would simulate fur and feathers and as I still don't have a plugin that simulates feathers this meant I couldn't do it in Lightwave, so I looked towards a puppet.
As I've said many times, I love puppets and I'm not bothered if the characters or creatures look like puppets as like Jim Henson. It’s the story that is important and if puppets help you tell the story then that's good enough for me. So I made this hopping walking puppet bird, that with some strategic edits from a (POV) point of view shot, we could cut into it hopping down towards the baby, but the bird used strings and the shot was exterior, if it was calm and there was no wind we were fine but if it was even slightly breezy it could have caused all manner of problems and I didn’t want to risk ruining the shoot.

So the decision was taken to change the Wise One into a different character and a butterfly represents change and is also more relevant to the story (giving nothing away), it was also small enough to go easily behind the animatronic baby.

Things were not that easy though, changing the bird to the butterfly, we had to use a yellow reflective ball on a long stick to represent the butterfly's path, from this we could see where the light through the trees was cast and how much light to add to the virtual butterfly to match the live plate.

To do this we created a virtual ball the exact size, shape and colour as the real yellow ball on the stick and matched every frame of movement, matching beams of light to match to the virtual one, this way when we replaced the yellow ball with the butterfly the light would match perfect.

Were did you find that!!!! That photograph was from one of the first shooting days as you know doubt remember,
When we first started shooting I never kept much of a record as I did later on, so any pics are most welcome. I seem to remember you taking that one and I know why, it's the person to the right that you wanted to get a photograph of, as you can tell by the candid look on my face... Oh Sue, we mentioned Sue once before on the forum and you spoke about her with fond memories.

I was looking at the Miscellany Production Photograph Album on the official web page and I noticed a character on the photograph, titled, "AMIGA days", he is red with long arms and a grey head. He’s in the trailer, he fly's into shot with mist all around him and the moon behind him, you have not mentioned this character anywhere, who is he and what does he do Question

Looking at the new photographs, how big were the model huts Question

the one in that pic looks big.

I know you said that there were various sizes but that one looks about 40 times bigger than the one’s on the main “Tree City model” Question

I did make many different size huts, I looked at what was needed, how much detail I wanted to show and just worked from there. The photograph you are talking about is showing just a segment of the hut and doorway, mostly used for foreground setups, other scale huts were then put in descending order, just like on the tree city.

If I'd had a sufficient budget, my plan was to make full size huts, but it was not to be and I decided rather than wait, this was the best alternative.

truthfully I forget were I am and I just try to put over to the actors what the shot is trying to say, if that sounds corny then I'm guilty, but how els could I convey the emotion of this scene. Smile
