City!

Although back in 1973, it was a town.  It became a city in 1992 as part of the Queen's 40th Jubilee celebrations, which was oddly enough the first time since 1973 that Sunderland ended up in the FA Cup final.

It's now the biggest city in the North-east, although this claim is disputed by some people (these are known as "Geordies").  But The Times says it is, so there.

Hi oddbodd, well Im not a "geordie" but as a born and bred mackam I will never get used to it being a city. It will always be a town to me, when I get on the bus I always say "to the town" much to the puzzlement of our many Polish bus drivers. Also note I said town not toon as our geordie friends may say.

Have to admit I used to laugh at the irony when Geordies used to wind up us mackems about Sunderland not being a city but then constantly referred to the "City" of Newcastle as The Toon.

I know when Sunderland was a town it was the largest town in Europe so now that its a city logic dictates that it is the largest in the North East. However that is probably only because Washington was added to Sunderland. Which I know annoys quite a few Washingtonians, especially the Toon supporters among them.
