Short Circuit 1 & 2

Whether you watch these for their comic element or because it's sci-fi, these two films are nonetheless 80s classics. They added a new name to the robot roll of honour: Johnny 5.

The two films centre around the adventures of this hugely loveable robot, who becomes alive after being hit by lightning. Though there are different themes to both films, the same combination of wit and slapstick graces both.

The first film shows how Johnny becomes alive, and finds himself winding up at Ally Sheedy's house. Lucky sod. Johnny soon learns the equivalence between death and disassembling, and when he finds that his creators need to disassemble him, he and Ally do their best to prevent it. They're assisted by enlisting the robot's creators (Fisher Steven and Steve Guttenberg) to the effort against the electronics company, who include Police Academy's Captain Harris in their ranks. Unfortunately for the Leccy boys, Johnny is indeed alive and kicking ass.

The second film is set in Newyork, where Fisher Stevens has set up a toy company building miniature versions of the robot. This film is no less funny and makes a very good sequel, though the theme is familiar - the naïve newcomer exploited by the unscrupulous. However, Johnny isn't quite as dumb as they think..and has the last laugh. No Ally Sheedy this time, but at least there's Cynthia Gibb.

Never seen Short Circuit 1 & 2 although I am a big Ally Sheedy fan, I've never got over her in the Red Shoe Diaries - Auto Erotica Shocked
