The Invisible Man (1933)

Another classic 1930s Universal flick, with many of the usual suspects. James Whale directs this films which also stars Univerla Regular Claude Rains (in the title role), E. E. Clive and the gloriously comic Una O'Connor - it must be said that it feels quite odd watching an actress born in 1880 - before the Football League or Jack The Ripper made themselves known.

The story of the film is entertaining enough. Claude Rains is an inventor who has discovered a way to make himself invisible. Unfortunately, he doesn't realise that it also makes him go nuts. After a spate of murders and assualts, the police have to fim a way to apprehend a man who cannot be seen.

The crowning glory of this film, however, are the effects. in 1933, even sound was still a novelty in film-making, but the illusion of invisibility seems to equal, if not eclispe, the effects in many more modern films. It's worth watching if only for that.

Smile Totally right, those were bloody good special effects for it's time, so hard to do even now let alone then, as optical printers were just being invented .. what must people have thought back then, only a few years earlier thery were ducking at the sight of a train projected on a piece of white cloth.
