The Last King of Scotland

I'd heard many good reviews about this film, not least of all based around Forest Whittaker's portrayal of Idi Amin, the Ugandan Despot responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths of his people in the 1970s. You know how it is when you hear a film hyped so much - even if it is as good a film as it is said to be, you can often be underwhelmed. In this case, I was not.

James McAvoy plays a young, idealistic, naîve Scottish doctor, working in 70s Uganda. Quite by chance, he ends up having to help the President, Idi Amin, with an injured hand. Amin, having a passion for Scottish culture, brings the young doctor closer and closer into his inner sanctum. The doctor, however, believing that Amin is a good, honest, freedom fighter, doesn't quite realise the problems that the president is causing - and how cheap life is to the tyrant.

Forest Whittaker is excellent in this role. He looks every inch the part. McAvoy is similarly splendid and is a star to watch out for.
