Very much took me by suprise this movie, most people said they didn't like it and that Johnny Depp gives a tedious performance... Well I'm not one to be a sheep and if I like something I say so even if most people don't get what I get from a movie. Any hoo, the DVD info on the back had lead me to believe it was all sex and nothing else, hence the 18 cert which in this case I don't understand why... I've seen 12s with as much simulated sex, such as Bee Season which even has an out- take in the extras more sexually intense than in the The Libertine ...what I'm trying to say is, it was that aspect that the movie was sold on, all the wrong reasons. The external aspect of Johnnys character is superficial, it's what they want you to go and see it for .. whats more interesting is what he's hiding all the time, from the onset with Johnnys monologue, of which most people have'nt got, he puts you on edge and tries to draw you in deeper into what, like I said could be such a predictable character...there's definitely more going on but unfortunately I think most audiences just didn't get it.
I giveThe Libertine definitely worth seeing for a good performance by Depp.

One of Johnny's better films, I think. He once again proves his ability to play a British character to great effect. I do love the monolgue at the beginning, there's a hint of Richard III to it in the admission of arrogant malignance. But it's the way that his character progresses through the film that makes it as watchable as it is.
