I quite enjoyed this colourful, sometimes quirky tale by the acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. It's particularly worth seeing for Antonia Banderas in a role quite different to most of his English-speaking parts. Not the long haired Latino lover that we know so well - this time, his hair is short and his character is little more than an insecure nutcase.
Having been orphaned at an early age and spending most of his life in institutions, he is released into society and seeks out a woman with whom he'd had a one night stand. On finding her, on the set of her latest film, he follows her home, and promptly kidnaps her, like you do. His idea is to keep her captive, bound and gagged at times when he cannot watch over her, until she falls in love with him.
The way that Almodóvar handles this story, and the relationships between the characters, is both surprising yet believable at the same time. Banderas plays his role excellently, as does Victoria Abril, his victim. It has some gloriously comic moments that are typical of Almodóvars work. And I'm sure those red-blooded males out the will like the bit in the bath with the scuba diver thingy. A quality film.
