English Standards, Etc.

Oddbodd/John, Chloe, I have to admit, I found this very amusing!  However, I’m not surprised who started this, Mr. ‘I Know About English Better Than Anyone But I Don’t Really.’

For your information, over the years, English standards have chopped and changed even reverted back to previous standards, depending on where you’re from and what school you went to, etc.  However, I’m going to comment on a couple of things raised to educate you both a bit with the current standards.

First of all, you BOTH don’t know how to use commas properly.

You don’t need to use commas before conjunction words like and, but, or, because, etc. anymore unless part of the sentence prior is a parenthesis (can be taken out and not effect the sentence for those who are not familiar with the term.)

Oddbodd/John, what Chloe meant, I think, was the comma after put when you told her to get a ‘sense of humour.’  It shouldn’t have been PUT there.

Now for the fun ones that John brought up:

1. Comma has 2 Ms – can’t disagree with this one.  ‘I wouldn't know how to use a coma’ – however, John you know perfectly well how to use comas.  You put people in comas when you bore them with your arrogance and being an a***.

2. "Sarcastically and humorous" - "Sarcastically" is an adverb and therefore has no place in this construction.  I agree that ‘sarcastic and humourus’ or ‘sarcastically humorous’ would be best and is how I would more than likely write it.  However, Chloe’s original way (apart from the spelling error) is still acceptable, depending on how you want the sentence said, etc.

3. My use of quotation marks and commas is quite correct, or at least one correct way of using them.  No, have to disagree with that with the quote from TNC’s post.  First of all, you didn’t quote him correctly.  You only used part of the sentence and misquoted him but that’s you all over twisting people’s words.  Maybe you should become a journalist or, better yet, a politician.  They are good at twisting words.  All quotes like that should be in single quotes not double.

4.  Entire sentences should not be parenthesised, nor should the full stop appear within the parentheses.  Absolute utter rubbish!  Full sentences CAN be parenthesised.  This happens regularly, especially in technical manuals.  The full stop should ALWAYS be on the inside.  This is a rule 90% of the public get wrong.  ALL ending punctuation goes inside the brackets, inverted commas or quotation marks being used.  A perfect example is when using speech.  Look at where the punctuation is.  The only punctuation that can be put outside a parenthesis is a comma, but, most of the time, there is no need for a comma after wards.

5. The present participle for the verb, "to shop" is, "shopping", not, "shoppin".  Think this was just a typing error but this didn’t stop Oddbodd from being an A***.

6. "Sense of Humour" and, "Personality" have no need to be capitalised here.  You’re right there’s no need but it is acceptable if she wanted to emphasis or refer to a name/title.

At the end of the day, who gives a flying f*** on forums like this as long as people understand what others are saying.  John, you obviously don’t realise when someone is taking the p*** like Chloe has been.  She is very good at English, hence, why I asked her to read my book.  A bit of advice for Oddbodd/John, stop being an a*** about people’s writing/English abilities.  You’re not our English teacher so f*** off.  However, that won’t change you because you enjoy being a public a*** and it’s not surprising you fall out with friends easily and you wonder why I’m not talking to you.

That’s my say on the matter and I think this discussion closed should be closed – please let’s not have anymore of this crap getting at people’s English standards or it’ll be deleted.  None of us are perfect on the forum with English, including me, so let’s just leave it.  However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a bit banter, etc with other subjects!

Being the lovely bloke I am, I wished him a kiss for New Year.  Unfortunately, Phil seems to think there's something wrong with men kissing other men.  Crazy.

Oddbodd/Chloe – girls, girls, girls, this threat is about Michael Jackson NOT f****** English standards.  It doesn’t surprise me who started that though.  However, if you would like to see my comments on the issues raised, please go to the threat I’ve set up where you can go and bitch or banter about anything you like and not worry about deviating from a topic.

Well TNC I do mind you asking, as I do not believe in airing dirty laundry in public.

Fu** it!  On this occasion I will since he likes doing it.  It all stems back to a year ago, or maybe it's two now, when we were out for a friend's birthday.  Oddbodd, and my friend whose birthday it was, were starting to be funny with me and starting questioning my sexuality.  They then were accusing me of being gay and in a very serious 'in your face' way which I didn't take kindly to.  Especially as it was in a public place where anyone could have heard and it wasn't the first time Oddbodd has done something like that.  Given that he was a bit pi****, I resisted in doing something I may of regretted.  At the end of the night, I gave him a lift home hoping to get an apology for being an ar**.  Did I, did I sh***.  As it was not the first time this had happened, it was then I thought, can't be bothered with this ar**hole if that's the way he goes on.  He had plenty of chances to apologise but didn't (like someone else's behaviour on the forum, think that rubbed off on Oddbodd then it could have been the other way round.)  His behaviour was so even Nige/H's company was far more tolerable than Oddbodd.  It was almost like come back Nige all is forgiven.

That’s the reason why nothing else.  Although kissing blokes is sick.

OMG! Knew he p***** you off Phil, but didnt realise why. Oddbodd R U an absolute moron? Actually forget I asked, you obviously are. A word of advice, 2 things u dont make fun of people with, or take the p*** out of them with, are disabilities, or sexuality; especially in public. For a guy that is supposed to be spit, and polish with English dont you know that word that begins with s and ends in y. its only small, but means a lot. Even if you couldnt apologise straight away whether Phil was talking to you or not, you wait until the right moment, and do it, but dont leave it too long. Sounds like H's attitude rubbed off on you. Actually its probably the other way round considering I used to hear good things about H from Phil until he stabbed him in the back.  Do you have any friends left? If thats the way you treat them you dont deserve any!  Do you know what the term friend means, because it sounds like you dont. I am disgusted!

As for Phil being gay I know someone first hand that can vouch he isnt. Come to think of it I can vouch he isnt after I heard Phil going hammer and tongs with them.

How can you treat someone as nice as Phil like s***?  You couldnt ask for a nicer man, and good friend to have. I only hope you, and H realise, what a good friend youve lost in Phil. YOU MORON!

It's quite a while since I've posted on this, and thought I'd stop by to see what was going on.  My god what has happened! See the bitchin' hasnt stopped. On one side we have H, and Oddbodd, on the other we have Chloe, TNC 2, and Philster.  Hang on, whats wrong with that picture? Philster siding with TNC 2, WTF! When and why did he leave the three stooges?

Oh I see now. Tsk, tsk you daft gits H and Oddbodd. Where were you when brains were handed out, at the 7/11?  They're still taking enrolments at colleges, so you both better sign up for one of those personality development courses.  Better yet how about charm school, because you desperately need it if you treat friends like that!

I'll be watching closely on this!

Fool, said I, you do not know,
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you,
But my words, like silent raindrops fell -
                                          and echoed
In the wells of silence.

-- Paul Simon.
