This was perhaps my favourite TV show as a kid, and it's amazing how much of it I've recognised and known what's coming next. It's been a jolly good nostalgia trip for me.

For those not familiar with it, as it wasn't that well known in Britain, it's a sci-fi anime series, which begins in near future (er, 1999 - this was made in the early 80s). To start, a massive alien spaceship crash lands on Macross Island in the Pacific. The people of Earth begin to rebuild the spaceship and within ten years it is operational. However, it sends a signal to the alien race to whom it belonged - the Zentradi - and soon all manner of battles are being fought between earth and these alien soldiers, stretching form Earth to Pluto.

The main protagonist is Rick Hunter, an ace pilot in the Earth defence force struggling to work out whether he fancies Lin Minmei, the spoilt brat pop-star, or Lisa Hayes, the straight-laced Lieutenant-Commander, but there's a large selection of other major characters during the series.

Thankfully, it's as entertaining now as it was when I was a kid, but for different reasons. As a kid, I loved the cool battles and the fact that the Zentradi race are often disgusted by human intimacy, such as kissing, which was highly humorous during that girls-are-disgusting period that all boys go through. Now, however, the battle are still cool, but it's got a good storyline to keep me entertained, and isn't simply a sugary cartoon where nobody gets killed or has heartbreak.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
