Boris Karloff will always be associated with Frankenstein. So much so, that it's often easy to forget that he did do plenty of other films. This one, from the people who brought us the bolt-necked monster, is a tribute to his versatility. So much so, that the film is preceded by a producer's note clarifying that it is indeed Karloff playing the role of Morgan Femm, lest any confusion should be caused by the difference in this role and that of Frankenstein's Monster.
Karloff is the nominal head of the Femm household, which is stumbled upon by three weary dark-and-stormy-night travellers in the middle of Wales. At first the hous appears to simply be occupied by one or two loonies, but it seems that simple lunacy is not all that the house seems to comprise.
It's not the best film that Universal produced during their tenure at the helm of horror cinema, but is certainly worth a watch. Charles Laughton also stars, and it's odd to see him playing a cheeky Yorkshire chap when I'm more used to see him playing the misery guts Gracchus in Spartacus.
