The Incredible Hulk

There's one rule that shouldn't be broken regarding Marvel characters and that's changing their origin and tampering with their fundamental and well developed characterization.

They did both with the Hulk film and no matter how good the CGI was that wasn't going to hold our attention alone. I myself nearly fell asleep through the first half, it was that slow and boring and the story angered me (nearly turned green). Any hoo! it seems they have hopefully thought carefully about the character and plot line this time and rather than ILM doing the Hulk it's going to be WETA,so lets keep our fingers and toes crossed cos the Hulk is a good marvel character that done correctly could be entertaining and a worthy success to any of the other successful marvel entourage.

So two-time Academy Award nominee Edward Norton has signed on to play Bruce Banner, who transforms into Marvel's renowned, larger-than-life Super Hero, The Hulk in Marvel Studios' action-packed, new big screen adaptation of The Incredible Hulk. The film, which is being directed by Louis Leterrier and distributed by Universal Pictures, is scheduled to smash into theaters on June 13, 2008.

This pic seems to be paying homage to the Hulk TV series/even that's heading in the right direction of likability.  Very Happy

With repsect to changing the origins, let's not forget that the classic Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno Hulk of the 70s, loved by so many Marvel fans (myself included) changed the origin.  The first Hulk by Marvel was grey rather than green, and was the product of some (atomic?) explosion, rather than an experiment with gamma rays gone wrong.  In this case, I think it worked.  Let's also remember the recent Spider-man films, in which the origin was a bite from a genetically-modified, rather than a radioactive explosion.

When you make a film of a comic-book story, it's a re-make of sorts, just in a different medium, and the principles that apply to re-makes of classics apply here as well.  You should treat the original property with due reverence and respect, otherwise the fans will hate you, good film or not.

It doesn't just apply to comic books, though, but also to conventional literature, and there are examples of where origins and suchlike have been tampered with in the move to celluloid, without detriment to the finished product.  A perfect example is Dracula, a book in which Vampires can walk by day and where the villian is dispatched not by a stake through the heart or exposure to sunlight, but by more pedestrian means.  However, the combined efforts of Hammer and Universal have not stopped me enjoying both the book and the films.

However, if it's the Ang Lee version of the Hulk that you speak of, I wasn't at all impressed, and left halfway through.  The Hulk himself just looked wrong, for some reason.

I totally agree oddbodd with what your saying regarding changing origins, character info and about Ang Lee's version ....But I must correct some of your info regarding the Hulk... His colour was grey for the first issue but this was not intentional but in fact an ink colour printing problem that was rectified in the second issue and onwards.

Info and link

The Hulk debuted in The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962), by writer Stan Lee, penciller and co-plotter Jack Kirby, and inker Paul Reinman. In the first issue, the Hulk was gray rather than green. Writer and Marvel editor-in-chief Lee had wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group.[1] Colorist Stan Goldberg, however, insisted to Lee that the coloring technology at the time could not present the color grey clearly or consistently, resulting in different shades of grey, and even green, in the issue. From issue #2 (July 1962) on, Goldberg colored the Hulk's skin green.[2] Green was used in retellings of the origin, even to the point of reprints of the original story being re-colored, for the next two decades.

Also... the Bomb...or G-Bomb as it was referred to was always a Gamma Bomb. The following scans from the original origin will show you that Gamma Rays from the bomb were always referred to as the catalyst for changing Bruce Banner into the Hulk.

Nuff said....SL

Got to admit, I'm not looking forward to this.  Hated the first one.  Like Carl said, they spoilt the first one with that stupid genetic thing.  It bored me!  The CG was dodgy as well.  The new one looks better but I really think they should have used an actor.  Like the homage to the TV series on the pic though.

The TV series might of been different to the comic but it kept to a similar way Dr Banner got his powers.  Unlike TNC 2, I loved the Hulk TV series and Spider-man as well.  I'm gutted that they didn't get around to doing the TV movie with the two of them in.  It was planned that the cast from the live action series in the 70s of Spider-man and Hulk were going to do a TV movie like the Daredevil and Thor ones.  However, they had to scrap it because of Bill Bixby dying of cancer.
